Why some months have no dates
These dates come from a conservative rule set, written down from the Muhurta Chintamani and checked against other sources. The main filters are:
- Lunar month. Only Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha. That is why January (mostly Pausha), April (Chaitra) and most of the second half of the year drop out.
- Chaturmas. No dates from Devshayani Ekadashi to Devutthana Ekadashi, roughly July to November.
- Leap month. No date in an Adhik (extra) month.
- Uttarayana and Kharmas. The Sun must be in its northern course, and days with the Sun in Dhanu or Meena are left out.
- Weekday. Not Sunday, Tuesday or Saturday.
- Tithi, nakshatra and yoga. Only certain tithis and the fixed and soft nakshatras count, and harsh yogas and Bhadra are cut out. The window inside a good day ends when one of these changes.
- Venus and Jupiter. No date while either is set (combust), with a margin of days around it.
Why other calendars list more dates
Drik Panchang's 2027 list for New Delhi has more dates than ours, including some in January, late March, April, November and December. Every one of our 16 dates is also on Drik's list. The difference is in the rules: Drik Panchang also opens the months of Kartika and Margashirsha, which the texts we follow call middling or meant for an old house, and the details of which tithis and nakshatras count also differ. Several of our windows are also narrower than Drik's for the same date, for the same reason.
Neither list is "wrong". They follow different, documented conventions. If your family pandit gives you a date not on our list, that is a valid choice within their tradition.
Planning the day
- Fix the exact time with your pandit. A good day is only the first filter; the pandit will usually choose a lagna (rising sign) within the window.
- Night windows are common. Some families enter at night or before dawn. Think about lights, neighbours and building rules.
- Book early for February and May. These are popular months.
If you would like a pandit to perform the puja, see our Griha Pravesh puja page. For what happens in the ceremony itself, read our step-by-step Griha Pravesh guide.
How these times were worked out
Every date and time in this article was computed by Proper Pandit's Muhurat Finder (its Griha Pravesh rules) for New Delhi (28.61°N, 77.21°E, Indian Standard Time). We then checked each one against Drik Panchang's page for New Delhi on 31 October 2026. Where the two differ, it is by a minute or two, which comes from rounding and small differences in how sunrise and the Moon are calculated. We round the start of a window up and the end down, so a window shown here never runs past the one you would get from a more exact calculation.
Your own city will differ. Sunrise and sunset move with latitude and longitude, so look up your city on our panchang page, and if your family priest or temple follows a different timing, follow them.
