Griha Pravesh Muhurat 2026: Auspicious Dates and Times for a New Home

The Griha Pravesh muhurat (गृह प्रवेश मुहूर्त) dates for 2026 below are computed, not copied: our Muhurat Finder checks every day of the year against the classical rules for entering a new home and lists the days and time windows that pass all of them, for New Delhi by default or for the city you pick. Because the rules allow only four lunar months and the Sun's northern course, every date falls between late winter and early summer; a family moving in the second half of 2026 usually looks at the 2027 dates, shown as well.

Griha Pravesh dates, month by month

Each date shows the time window in which every rule holds, with the tithi and nakshatra of that window. A window that runs past midnight is marked with the next day's date. Times are local to the city shown.

Dates vary by city. Sunrise, the moment a tithi or nakshatra changes, and the days around a planet's setting all depend on where the home is, so a window in New Delhi can be shorter, longer or missing in Mumbai or Chennai. Pick your city above, or use the full Muhurta Finder for any place in India.

The rules these dates follow

The finder applies the rules for an apurva Griha Pravesh, the first entry into a newly built or newly bought home, as given in the Muhurta Chintamani and cross-checked against other published muhurta works. Where sources disagree, the stricter reading is used. In plain words:

Nakshatra (the Moon's star)

Only the four fixed (dhruva) stars, Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha and Uttara Bhadrapada, and the four soft (mridu) stars, Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati. Fixed stars are traditionally chosen for anything meant to last; soft stars for gentle, welcoming beginnings.

Tithi (the lunar day)

Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami and Ekadashi in either fortnight, and Trayodashi in the bright fortnight (Shukla paksha). The rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi), Amavasya and the rest are left out, and the tithi must hold for every minute of the window.

Vara (the weekday)

Not Sunday or Tuesday, which the classical verse excludes, and not Saturday, which some authorities also advise against. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday remain.

Lunar month and the Sun's course

Only the lunar months Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha (counted from new moon to new moon), and only while the Sun is in Uttarayana, its northern course from Makara to Mithuna. An adhik (extra) or kshaya lunar month is excluded.

Periods that are avoided

  • Guru and Shukra asta: the days when Jupiter or Venus is too close to the Sun to be seen, with 15 days either side for Jupiter, and 15 days before and 10 after for Venus.
  • Kharmas and Chaturmas: any day touched by the Sun in Dhanu or Meena, and the four months from Devshayani to Devutthana Ekadashi.
  • Bhadra and harsh yogas: the Vishti karana (Bhadra) and nine harsh yogas such as Vyatipata and Vaidhriti are cut out of each window.
  • Very short windows: anything under one ghati (24 minutes) is dropped.

What the finder leaves to your pandit

The lagna (rising sign) at the moment of entry, the householder's own Chandra bala and Tara bala from their birth star, and the direction of the main door. These need the family's details, so the pandit fixes the exact time inside the window. Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika are not Griha Pravesh rules in the texts, so a window that overlaps them is still shown; many families simply avoid that part.

This rule list was approved by Proper Pandit on 23 October 2026 and has not yet been checked by a pandit, so treat the windows as a well-sourced starting point for that conversation.

Why some calendars show more dates

Printed panchangs and websites often list two or three times as many Griha Pravesh dates. The difference is almost always in the rules, not the astronomy. Some calendars also open Kartika and Margashirsha, which the classical texts reserve for re-entering an old house; some allow Saturday; some mark only three days around a planet's setting instead of the longer span the texts give; and some do not check the tithi minute by minute across the window.

None of those calendars is wrong to follow its own tradition. This page takes the conservative reading so that a date it shows is acceptable to the widest range of families. If your family pandit follows a looser custom, he may well approve a date that is not here.

How to choose from these dates

  1. Shortlist two or three windows that suit the move, your work and the guests you want to invite.
  2. Share them with your pandit along with the householder's birth details; he checks the lagna and the family's own star strength and picks the moment of entry.
  3. Plan the day backwards from that moment: the kalash and threshold rites start shortly before it, and the havan and the milk boiling follow it. Our step-by-step vidhi shows the usual order.
  4. Arrange the samagri a few days early, so nothing is bought in a rush on the morning itself.

Families abroad can use the same approach: pick the city of the new home, not a city in India, and see our page on Griha Pravesh by video call for NRI families.

Frequently asked questions

  • Which months are good for Griha Pravesh in 2026?

Under the classical rules used here, only the lunar months Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha while the Sun is in its northern course, which in the Gregorian calendar falls roughly from late January to late June. The exact dates for your city are in the list above.

  • Is there a Griha Pravesh muhurat after June 2026?

Not under the conservative rules this page uses: Chaturmas begins in mid-year and the Sun's southern course follows, so the next run of dates opens in early 2027. Some regional calendars allow Kartika and Margashirsha for a home; ask your pandit if your family follows that custom.

  • Why are the times different for my city?

Every window starts and ends where a tithi, nakshatra or yoga changes, or where sunrise falls, and the asta days depend on the place too. A few hundred kilometres can move a window by many minutes or remove it. Pick your city to recompute.

  • Can we do Griha Pravesh on a Saturday?

Some calendars allow it, since the classical verse excludes only Sunday and Tuesday. A well-known modern authority advises against Saturday, and this page follows the stricter view, so no Saturday appears here.

  • Do we still need a pandit if we use these dates?

Yes. The window says when the day's sky passes the rules; the pandit fixes the lagna inside it, checks the householder's Chandra bala and Tara bala, and performs the rites.
