Three questions families ask

Kundli with Sade Sati, Manglik and Dasha

Three questions come up again and again when families look at a Kundli: am I in Sade Sati, am I Manglik, and which dasha am I running? ProperPandit's free Kundli answers all three from your birth details, and shows how it reached each answer. This page explains what each term means, how it is calculated, and where to see it.

Saturn's seven and a half years

Sade Sati

Sade Sati is the period, about seven and a half years, when Saturn passes through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself and the sign after it. Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, hence the name, which means "seven and a half".

Because it is counted from the Moon sign, Sade Sati depends on the Moon's sidereal position at birth. When the Moon is close to the edge of a sign, a small change in the birth time can move it, and ProperPandit says so rather than hiding it.

In your free Kundli: a Sade Sati section with your periods. In the 84-page book: your Sade Sati passages alongside the Vimshottari chapter, and Saturn's next sign changes in "The Next Twelve Months". On its own: the Sade Sati check needs only your birth details.

Mangal dosha

Manglik, or Mangal dosha

A chart is called Manglik when Mars sits in certain houses: most traditions count the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th, counted from the Lagna and often also from the Moon and Venus. Jyotish texts also list cancellations, for example when Mars is in its own sign, or when both partners' charts carry it.

ProperPandit does not stop at a yes or no. The free Kundli's dosha section names what it found, and the 84-page book has a dosha scale that shows how present each dosha is after its cancellations, with the rule behind each line.

Read what Mangal dosha means for the full explanation, and see the Kundli Milan pages if you are matching two charts.

Vimshottari

Vimshottari dasha

The Vimshottari dasha divides a 120-year cycle into nine planetary periods: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17. Your first period is ruled by the lord of the nakshatra the Moon was in at birth, and how much of it was left depends on how far the Moon had travelled through that nakshatra.

Each mahadasha divides into antardashas in the same order. Jyotish reads the planet running the period, and its place in your chart, as the theme of that stretch of life.

No fear

A calm reading

None of these three is a verdict. Sade Sati comes to everyone two or three times in a lifetime; Mangal dosha is common and often cancelled; every dasha has its own themes. ProperPandit shows what the chart contains and why, without predictions. Remedies, where tradition offers them, are kept small and doable.

To see all three for yourself, make your free Kundli. It is free and in English.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

  • How do I know if I am in Sade Sati now?

Make your free Kundli: its Sade Sati section shows your periods. The separate Sade Sati check on ProperPandit gives the same answer from your birth details.

  • Is Manglik decided from the Lagna or the Moon?

Traditions differ. Most count Mars's house from the Lagna, and many also from the Moon and Venus. ProperPandit names the rule it applies next to the result.

  • Which dasha am I running?

The free Kundli shows your Vimshottari mahadasha timeline and the antardashas of the period running now. Kundli at a glance shows it as a ribbon with a mark at your present age.

  • Why does my birth time matter for the dasha?

The dasha starts from the Moon's position in its nakshatra. The Moon moves about half a degree an hour, so the time changes how much of the first period was left, and every later date moves with it.
