What is my ascendant (Lagna)?
Your ascendant, or Lagna, is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It needs your exact birth time and place.
The short answer
Your ascendant is your Lagna
Your ascendant, called the Lagna in Vedic astrology, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. It is the first house of your Kundli: every other house is counted from it, so it decides which house each planet falls in.
If the Moon sign describes the mind, the tradition reads the Lagna as the body, the temperament and the way you meet the world. That is why a Kundli is usually named by its Lagna first: a "Simha Lagna chart" is a chart with Leo rising.
Every two hours
Why the exact time matters
The Earth turns once a day, so all twelve signs rise in turn: the Lagna changes about every two hours, and the degree moves about one degree every four minutes. Signs rise faster or slower depending on your latitude, so near India some signs pass in about an hour and a half and others take close to two and a half hours.
This is why the calculator needs a time and why the time must be right. Ten minutes either way changes the degree, and near the edge of a sign it changes the sign itself, and with it every house in the chart. A time from the birth certificate or hospital record is best. If your time is only remembered, read the result as provisional, and note how close the degree is to 0° or 30°.
Births abroad add two common mistakes: converting the time to Indian time before entering it, and forgetting daylight saving. Enter the time as the local clock showed it; the zone and any daylight saving on that date are found from your birthplace.
The method
How we calculate your Lagna
- The instant. Your local time becomes universal time with your birthplace's time zone on that date.
- Sidereal time. From the instant and your longitude we find the local sidereal time, the part of the sky overhead.
- The rising point. From that and your latitude we find the ecliptic degree on the eastern horizon, then subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa of your birth date.
- Sign and degree. The sign holding that point is your Lagna; the degree says how far into it.
This is the same Lagna your free Kundli shows, from the same engine, with whole-sign houses counted from it.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Lagna and Moon sign?
The Lagna is the sign rising in the east at birth and changes about every two hours. The Moon sign is the sign the Moon was in and changes about every two and a quarter days. Both are read in a Kundli; the Lagna needs an exact time, the Moon sign usually does not.
Can I find my ascendant without a birth time?
No. Every sign rises once a day, so without a time any of the twelve could be your Lagna. If you know only the Moon sign or nakshatra, use the Moon sign calculator or the nakshatra calculator, which work without a time.
Is ascendant the same as rising sign?
Yes. Ascendant, rising sign and Lagna all name the sign on the eastern horizon at birth. The Vedic Lagna is measured in the sidereal zodiac, so it is often one sign earlier than a Western rising sign.
My birth time is approximate. Can I still use it?
Yes, but check the degree. If it is several degrees away from the start and end of the sign, a small error in the time will not change the sign. If it is within a degree or two of a boundary, the sign itself is uncertain.
Which house system is used?
Whole-sign houses: the Lagna's sign is the first house, the next sign the second, and so on. It is the system of the ProperPandit Kundli.
Is this free?
Yes. The calculator is free and nothing you enter is stored.
