Janam Kundali, in English

Kundli in English, explained in plain words

ProperPandit makes your Kundli in English. The chart is the traditional Vedic one, but every label, table and explanation is written in plain English, with the Sanskrit name kept beside it so you can talk to a pandit in either language. Below is a short glossary of the words you will meet, and what each one means in your chart.

For every reader

A Vedic chart, written for you

Many families grew up with a Kundli written in Hindi or Sanskrit, and many of us now read English more easily, especially outside India. A Kundli in English does not change the astrology. It is the same sidereal chart, with the same Lahiri ayanamsa and Vimshottari dashas; only the words around it change.

We keep the original terms because they matter. "Lagna" is shorter and more precise than "ascendant sign", and a pandit will use it. So each term appears once in Sanskrit, once in English, and then the chart talks to you plainly.

A short glossary

Kundli terms in English
TermIn EnglishWhat it shows in your Kundli
Kundli / Janam KundaliBirth chartWhere the Sun, Moon, planets, Rahu and Ketu stood at your birth, in the twelve signs and houses.
LagnaAscendantThe sign rising in the east at your birth. It fixes house 1, so it needs an accurate birth time.
RashiMoon signThe sign the Moon was in. In Vedic astrology this is 'your sign', which is why it can differ from a Western sun sign.
Nakshatra and padaLunar mansion and quarterOne of 27 sections of the sky, each split into 4 padas. Your birth nakshatra is the Moon's.
BhavaHouseOne of twelve areas of life, counted from the Lagna.
GrahaPlanetThe nine grahas: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.
DashaPlanetary periodVimshottari divides life into periods ruled by each graha, starting from your birth nakshatra's lord.
VargaDivisional chartA finer chart for one area of life, such as the Navamsa (D9) for marriage or the Dashamsha (D10) for work.
YogaCombinationA named pattern of planets, such as Gajakesari, that Jyotish reads in a particular way.
DoshaAfflictionA pattern Jyotish treats with care, such as Mangal dosha. Many have classical cancellations.
AyanamsaZodiac correctionThe angle between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs. ProperPandit uses Lahiri.

The diamond chart

How to read the North Indian chart

ProperPandit draws the chart in the North Indian (diamond) style. The houses stay in fixed places: house 1, the Lagna, is the diamond at the top centre, and the houses run counter-clockwise from there to house 12. Each planet is a two-letter code: Su Sun, Mo Moon, Ma Mars, Me Mercury, Ju Jupiter, Ve Venus, Sa Saturn, Ra Rahu, Ke Ketu. "(R)" after a code means the planet was retrograde.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

  • Is a Kundli in English less accurate than one in Hindi?

No. The language only changes the words around the chart. The calculation is the same: sidereal, Lahiri ayanamsa, Vimshottari dasha.

  • Will my pandit understand an English Kundli?

Yes. Every Sanskrit term is kept beside its English meaning, and the 84-page book names each convention it uses, so a pandit can follow it in their own terms.

  • Is my Moon sign the same as my zodiac sign?

In Vedic astrology your 'sign' usually means your Moon sign (rashi). Western astrology uses the Sun's tropical sign, so the two often differ.

  • Do I need to know astrology to read it?

No. The free reading and the PDFs explain each item in plain English, and the 84-page book opens with a plain-words summary.
