Read your Kundli, one placement at a time
Every planet in your birth chart sits in one of twelve houses. These guides explain what each placement means in classical Jyotish, what changes it, and which fears around it are myths, calmly and in plain English.
How to read a placement
- Find the placement. Make your free Kundli and note which house each planet occupies; the house marked 1 is your Lagna.
- Read the house. Each house covers a set of life topics, such as partnership for the 7th or career for the 10th.
- Read the planet. Each graha has its own nature: Saturn slows and steadies, Jupiter expands, Mars energises.
- Weigh the modifiers. The sign and dignity, the aspects, the house lord and the running dasha change the reading more than the placement alone.
- Keep it in proportion. A placement describes a tendency. No single factor decides the outcome of a life.

Frequently asked questions
What does a planet in a house mean in a Kundli?
It shows which area of life a planet's nature is expressed through. The house gives the topic, the planet gives the style, and the sign, aspects, house lord and dasha refine it.
How do I find which house a planet is in?
Make your Kundli with your date, time and place of birth. In the North Indian chart the house marked 1 is the Lagna, and the houses run anticlockwise from it.
Do I need my exact birth time?
Yes, for houses. The Lagna changes about every two hours, and with it every planet's house. Without a time, the Moon sign is still reliable on most days.
Are these guides predictions?
No. They explain what the tradition says about one placement. Your own chart is read as a whole, and nothing here is a forecast about you.
Who writes these guides?
ProperPandit's editors, from the classical texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika, in their own words.
