Births in the United States
Kundli for births in the USA
A Kundli for someone born in the United States has to know which of the country's time zones the birthplace was in, and whether daylight time was in force that day. ProperPandit works out both from the town you pick. You only enter the birth time exactly as the clock showed it, as on the birth certificate.
Six zones
The US time zones, in brief
| Zone | Standard time | Daylight time | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eastern | UTC−5 | UTC−4 | New York, New Jersey, Atlanta, Boston |
| Central | UTC−6 | UTC−5 | Chicago, Houston, Dallas |
| Mountain | UTC−7 | UTC−6 | Denver, Salt Lake City |
| Arizona (most of the state) | UTC−7 | no daylight time | Phoenix, Tucson |
| Pacific | UTC−8 | UTC−7 | Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle |
| Alaska / Hawaii | UTC−9 / UTC−10 | UTC−8 / none in Hawaii | Anchorage / Honolulu |
Some states are split between two zones, which is why the exact town matters more than the state. A birth in western Florida and one in Miami can be an hour apart on the clock.
Summer clocks
Daylight time and your birth date
Most of the USA moves its clocks forward an hour in spring and back in autumn. The dates have changed over the years: since 2007 daylight time runs from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, and earlier rules were different. You do not need to know any of this. ProperPandit takes the offset that applied at your birthplace on your birth date.
What you must not do is "correct" the time yourself. If the certificate says 7:40 a.m. in July, enter 7:40.
Computed by our engine
Worked examples from US births
Two births computed by our engine: once with the offset ProperPandit finds, once with a common mistake.
| Birth | Time zone found | Lagna | With a common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| New York City, USA 14 July 1992, 07:40 | America/New_York UTC−4 | Cancer 21.8° | UTC−5, standard time (EST) instead of daylight time: Leo 3.6° (a different sign) |
| Los Angeles, USA 20 September 2001, 21:40 | America/Los_Angeles UTC−7 | Taurus 4.3° | UTC+5:30, Indian time (IST): Libra 4.5° (a different sign) |
Entering a US birth time as if it were Indian time is the most damaging mistake: the chart is then made for a moment more than ten hours away, and the Lagna is usually several signs off.

Make your Kundli
Type your town (for example "Edison" rather than "New York"), pick it from the suggestions, and enter the local birth time. The online Kundli and the two-page PDF are free; the complete 84-page Janma Granth costs US$10 in the USA. Ready? make your free Kundli. For other countries, see births abroad.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Which time should I enter for a birth in the USA?
The time the clock showed in the USA, whether or not daylight time was running, exactly as on the birth certificate. Do not convert it to Indian time first; ProperPandit finds the time zone from your town and converts it itself.
Does it matter which state I was born in?
Yes, and the town matters even more. Several states, such as Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and Texas, are split between two time zones, so two towns in one state can be an hour apart on the clock. Pick your own town from the suggestions.
I was born in Arizona. Does that change anything?
Most of Arizona does not use daylight time, so its clocks stay on UTC−7 all year (the Navajo Nation is an exception). Pick your town and ProperPandit applies the right rule.
How much is the 84-page Kundli in the USA?
US$10, paid by UPI (India), PayPal or USDT.
