Why madhyahna

Ganesh Chaturthi is the Chaturthi of the bright half of Bhadrapada. Drik Panchang explains that Ganesha is believed to have been born during madhyahna, the midday part of the day, so the puja is done then.

In the traditional division, the time from sunrise to sunset is split into five equal parts: pratahkala, sangava, madhyahna, aparahna and sayankala. Madhyahna is the third, the middle fifth of the day. The festival day is the one on which Chaturthi is running during madhyahna.

In 2027 Chaturthi begins on the afternoon of 3 September, after that day's madhyahna, and ends at 12:26 PM on 4 September, during that day's madhyahna. So the day is 4 September, and the window is the part of madhyahna before Chaturthi ends: 11:05 AM to 12:26 PM in New Delhi.

Ganpati sthapana at home: a simple outline

Practices differ by family and region, especially between Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa and other parts of India, so take this as a general guide:

  1. Prepare the place the day before: a clean, raised platform with a fresh cloth.
  2. Bring the murti home covered, and unveil it at the time of sthapana.
  3. Invoke Ganesha with a short prayer (avahana), then offer water, flowers, durva grass, red flowers if available, and modak or laddoo.
  4. Do aarti, morning and evening, for as many days as your family keeps the murti: one and a half, three, five, seven or ten days.
  5. Visarjan on the last day, after a final aarti.

For an eco-friendly festival, many families choose a clay murti and immerse it in a bucket or tank at home.

If you would like a pandit to perform the sthapana puja, see our Ganesh Chaturthi puja page.

The moon-sighting custom

Many families avoid looking at the Moon on Ganesh Chaturthi night. Drik Panchang retells the Puranic story behind this: Krishna is said to have been falsely accused (Mithya Dosha) after seeing the Moon on this day. We haven't listed moon-sighting times here; check your local panchang if your family keeps this custom.

How these times were worked out

Every date and time in this article was computed by Proper Pandit's own panchang engine for New Delhi (28.61°N, 77.21°E, Indian Standard Time). We then checked each one against Drik Panchang's page for New Delhi on 31 October 2026. Where the two differ, it is by a minute or two, which comes from rounding and small differences in how sunrise and the Moon are calculated. We round the start of a window up and the end down, so a window shown here never runs past the one you would get from a more exact calculation.

Your own city will differ. Sunrise and sunset move with latitude and longitude, so look up your city on our panchang page, and if your family priest or temple follows a different timing, follow them.
