Diwali 2027: Lakshmi Puja time by city (Pradosh and Sthir Lagna)

Diwali Lakshmi Puja 2027 is on Friday 29 October. Amavasya ends at 7:06 PM that evening, so the window is short everywhere in India. In New Delhi the Pradosh and Vrishabha (fixed) lagna overlap from 6:36 PM to 7:06 PM. Times for ten Indian cities.

When is Diwali Lakshmi Puja in 2027, and what time should you do it? Diwali Lakshmi Puja falls on Friday 29 October 2027. This year the Amavasya (new Moon) tithi ends early in the evening, at 7:06 PM, so the puja window is short in every Indian city. In New Delhi the most favoured time, when Pradosh kaal, the fixed Vrishabha lagna and Amavasya all overlap, is 6:36 PM to 7:06 PM.

How to read the table:

  • All three together is the window most often recommended: Pradosh, a fixed lagna and Amavasya at once.
  • Where that overlap is short or missing, the wider Pradosh while Amavasya lasts is the usual choice. For 2027, Drik Panchang's pages give the overlap as the muhurat for New Delhi, Kolkata and Lucknow, and give the wider window (sunset to the end of Amavasya) for Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Pune.
  • If your family priest gives a different time, follow your family's tradition.

Why the window is so short this year

Diwali Lakshmi Puja is done on the Amavasya of Kartika (as the month is named in North India), in the evening. The rule Drik Panchang follows is that the day is the one on which Amavasya is running during Pradosh kaal, the period that starts at sunset.

In 2027 Amavasya begins on the evening of 28 October and ends at 7:06 PM on 29 October. Only the 29th has Amavasya at sunset, so that is Diwali. But Amavasya ends barely an hour after sunset, which cuts every city's window short.

Pradosh, Sthir Lagna and Vrishabha in plain words

  • Pradosh kaal begins at sunset. Here it is the first fifth of the night, from sunset towards the next sunrise, which works out to about two and a half hours.
  • Lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon. It changes roughly every two hours.
  • A sthir (fixed) lagna is one of the four fixed signs: Vrishabha (Taurus), Simha (Leo), Vrishchika (Scorpio) and Kumbha (Aquarius). Drik Panchang explains the traditional belief that puja in a fixed lagna helps Lakshmi stay in the home. On Diwali evening the fixed sign that rises during Pradosh is Vrishabha.

The Vrishabha lagna rises later in western cities, such as Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Pune, than in eastern ones like Kolkata. That is why the overlap with Amavasya is longest in the east and shortest or missing in the west this year.

Getting ready

Because the window is short, set everything up before sunset: the cleaned puja space, a red or yellow cloth, the images of Lakshmi and Ganesha, the kalash, lamps, flowers, sweets and the account books or valuables some families place in the puja. Then the puja can begin as soon as the window opens.

How these times were worked out

Every date and time in this article was computed by Proper Pandit's own panchang engine for each city in the table (Indian Standard Time). We then checked each one against Drik Panchang's Lakshmi Puja page for each city on 31 October 2026. Where the two differ, it is by a minute or two, which comes from rounding and small differences in how sunrise and the Moon are calculated. We round the start of a window up and the end down, so a window shown here never runs past the one you would get from a more exact calculation.

Your own city will differ. Sunrise and sunset move with latitude and longitude, so look up your city on our panchang page, and if your family priest or temple follows a different timing, follow them.

Questions people ask

What is the Lakshmi Puja muhurat on Diwali 2027 in Delhi? 6:36 PM to 7:06 PM on Friday 29 October 2027, when Pradosh, the Vrishabha lagna and Amavasya overlap. The wider Pradosh window while Amavasya lasts is 5:39 PM to 7:06 PM.

Why does the window end at 7:06 PM in every city? That is when Amavasya ends. A tithi ends at the same moment everywhere, so the clock time is the same across India.

There is little or no overlap for my city. What should I do? Do the puja in Pradosh before Amavasya ends, from sunset to 7:06 PM. That is the window Drik Panchang gives for cities such as Mumbai and Pune this year.

Is Diwali on 28 or 29 October 2027? Lakshmi Puja is on Friday 29 October 2027, the evening Amavasya runs at sunset.
