Dev Deepawali in Varanasi: Why the Ghats Are Lit on Kartik Purnima

Dev Deepawali, the 'Diwali of the gods', lights Varanasi's ghats on the full moon of Kartik, about fifteen days after Diwali. The beliefs behind it, how the day is fixed, and what to know before you go.

Dev Deepawali (also spelt Dev Deepavali, or called Dev Diwali) is the "Diwali of the gods". It is celebrated in Varanasi on Kartik Purnima, the full moon of the month of Kartik, about fifteen days after Diwali. On that evening the long arc of riverfront ghats, from the southern ghats to Raj Ghat, is lined with earthen lamps. Two beliefs explain the day. Popular belief holds that the gods come down to bathe in the Ganga that night. The other account, recorded by the Ministry of Tourism, ties the festival to Shiva's victory over the demon Tripurasura, which is why Kartik Purnima is also called Tripurari or Tripuri Purnima.

Two explanations, both traditional

The gods bathe in the Ganga. All India Radio's coverage and the Ministry of Tourism's Incredible India page both describe the belief that the gods descend to earth on this night to bathe in the Ganga at Kashi. The lamps are, in this telling, the city's welcome.

Shiva destroys the three cities. In the older myth, three asura brothers, the sons of Taraka, were granted three flying cities (tripura) by Brahma. The cities could be destroyed only by a single arrow, at the one moment they came into line. When their rule became oppressive, Shiva, riding a chariot built on a cosmic scale, loosed that arrow and burned all three. This earned him the name Tripurantaka, "ender of the three cities".

The story is old. A brief reference to Rudra cleaving the three citadels appears in the Taittiriya Samhita of the Yajurveda, and fuller versions are told in the Puranas. Popular tradition places the victory on Kartik Purnima, and the gods are said to have celebrated with lights. Incredible India describes Dev Deepawali as commemorating this victory.

The two accounts do not compete. Many people in Varanasi hold both, and others hold neither, celebrating simply because the city does. These are religious traditions, described here as such.

How Dev Deepawali relates to Diwali

Diwali falls on the new moon (amavasya) at the end of the dark fortnight. Dev Deepawali falls on the next full moon, the end of the following bright fortnight, about fifteen days later.

Which month that new moon "belongs to" depends on the regional calendar:

  • in the purnimanta reckoning common in North India, Diwali is on Kartik Amavasya, in the middle of Kartik, and Dev Deepawali closes the month on Kartik Purnima;
  • in the amanta reckoning common in the South and West, Diwali is the last day of Ashvina, and Kartik Purnima falls in the middle of Kartik.

Either way, the full moon is the same night. The two systems are explained in Amanta vs Purnimanta. How Kartik and the other months get their names is in the Hindu lunar months.

How the date is fixed

Dev Deepawali is tied to the Purnima tithi (the fifteenth lunar day) of Kartik. A tithi does not line up neatly with calendar days. When the full-moon tithi begins on one afternoon and ends the next, panchangs can differ on which evening to observe. That is why you will occasionally see two dates quoted.

  • The Ministry of Tourism's Incredible India events page lists Dev Deepawali 2026 in Varanasi on Tuesday, 24 November 2026 (checked 23 Oct 2026).
  • Drik Panchang's 2026 Purnima list for Varanasi gives Kartika Purnima on the same day, with the Purnima tithi running from 11:42 PM on 23 November to 8:23 PM on 24 November (IST). ProperPandit's own calendar engine gives the same day and the same tithi times. Confirm closer to the date with the Varanasi administration's announcements.
  • To see the tithi for your own city, use a Panchang. ProperPandit's daily Panchang shows the day's tithi and paksha; for a festival date, also check your local or temple panchang.

The same full moon elsewhere

Kartik Purnima is observed far beyond Varanasi, and in different ways:

  • Kartik snan. Ritual bathing in the Ganga (kartik snan) is one of the main observances in Varanasi, and bathing on Kartik Purnima is observed elsewhere too, for example at Pushkar Lake.
  • Karthigai Deepam. Tamil Nadu has a related lamp festival, timed by the coincidence of the full moon with the Krittika nakshatra. It does not always fall on the same day as the North Indian Kartik Purnima.
  • Guru Nanak's Gurpurab. Sikhs observe the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak on Kartik Purnima.
  • Tulsi Vivah. In many households, Kartik Purnima is the last day for the Tulsi Vivah ceremony.

What happens on the evening

Typically, in Varanasi:

  • Lamps on the ghats. Earthen lamps (diyas) are lit along the steps of the ghats. Incredible India describes the stretch from Assi Ghat to Raj Ghat. Lamps are also floated on the river, an offering called deepdan.
  • Ganga aarti. The evening aarti on the main ghats is one of the most watched moments.
  • The city lights up. Temples, rooftops and houses are lit as well. In recent years the state government has added light shows and fireworks; All India Radio reported a laser show and green fireworks in 2024.
  • At Kashi Vishwanath. The Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust lists the month of Kartik among the temple's major festival periods in its FAQ.

Lamp counts are announced each year by the authorities and vary widely between reports, so we do not repeat them here.

Practical notes for visitors

  • Crowds. This is one of the busiest nights of the year on the ghats. Expect heavy crowds and crowd-control arrangements near the river, and plan to arrive early.
  • Boats. Incredible India suggests watching from a boat on the Ganga. Seats are in heavy demand that evening, so agree the price in advance, make sure the boat is not overloaded, and check that life jackets are on board. We do not quote prices, which change every year.
  • Rooms. Rooms near the ghats fill early. Read the terms of any "Dev Deepawali package" carefully before paying.
  • If you are watching from home. The Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust offers live darshan from the temple on its official portal. ProperPandit's live darshan directory links to the trust's own stream.
